Findings from a Japanese based study, published in the Journal of Climacteric, show that antioxidants can help to reduce symptoms commonly associated with menopause.
Researchers from Jui-Tung Chen Clinic in Tokyo found that people with low levels of antioxidants in their system were more likely to suffer from severe menopausal symptoms.
The trial involved 160 women with an average age of 52. During the trial each woman submitted blood samples to help determine the levels of antioxidants in their body. The antioxidants that were measured included vitamins A, C and E, Selenium, Co Enzyme Q10 and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Age and weight measurements were also recorded.
Each of the women were also assessed using the Simplified Menopausal Index to establish the severity of the menopausal symptoms they experienced. The symptoms included hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, osteoporosis, weight gain, fatigue, breast tenderness and depression.
Researchers found that women who experienced severe menopausal symptoms also had lower levels of antioxidants present in the body. Age and weight did not account for the pattern between antioxidant levels and the severity of symptoms.
